It will also provide a perspective on how enhanced IT solutions are needed to support many of the Actions contained in the Premier's vision document,The Way Forward. This session is the first step in delivering on Action 1.14: "Increase the Number of Vendors Completing Government IT Work" as the OCIO is announcing implementation of  a Managed Service Provider approach for IT work opportunities beginning on April 1.

What does this mean?

The adoption of this new model will allow more companies to bid on Government IT work, thereby increasing competition and choice of vendor. Vendors wishing to compete for Q1 (April 2017) OCIO IT professional services opportunities must register with Flextrack, the Managed Service Provider of record, by mid-February. Representatives from Flextrack will be present at this session that will introduce the company, detail how the new model will work and will provide everything that you need to know to register and participate.

Atlantic Trade and Investment Growth Strategy (ATIGS) ICT RFP for the Provision of Consulting Services

$
0
0

The Government of Canada and the four provincial governments in Atlantic Canada have developed a new Atlantic Trade and Investment Growth Strategy (ATIGS) that is designed to support the region's long term growth by increasing the global competitiveness of the region and its firms.

Under the ATIGS, the provincial and federal governments are committed to unprecedented collaboration and coordination to develop and implement joint trade and investment initiatives that are coordinated, firm-focused, and build on the region's sector capabilities and capacity.

Opportunities for export growth continue to emerge for Atlantic companies in areas such as knowledge-based, value-added and resource sectors. Under ATIGS, Atlantic Sector Export Teams have been created to focus on export plan development and implementation activities to help Atlantic businesses seize and maximize export growth opportunities.

Consisting of government and sector stakeholders, the Teams will be tasked with developing and implementing long-term, evidence-based sector export development plans that contribute to the achievement of ATIGS targets.

Background

The ICT sector in Atlantic Canada is comprised of approximately 1,100 companies. Almost half of the ITC companies provide products and services related to enterprise software solutions. Telecommunications, big data and analytics, digital media, videogaming and educational technology are also important subsector of the ICT industry in Atlantic Canada.

While most ICT businesses are small, some of the region's businesses have had success in terms of being purchased or amalgamated with other larger players engaged in social media, IT security, apps, etc.

The newly formed ICT Atlantic Sector Export Team met in Halifax in June 2017. The Team is comprised of representatives from NATI, ACOA, the 4 Atlantic Canadian Provinces, Global Affairs Canada, Venn, TechImpact and Digital NS. During the face to face meeting, members discussed the development of an Atlantic Sector Export Strategy/Plan for the ICT industry, and the gathering of information on the industry in Atlantic Canada.

Since that meeting, information from each province's ICT industries was gathered and more is expected to be collected in the coming months. The Team has already collected information on the number of companies in Atlantic Canada, the number of companies in each sub-sectors, the total number of employees, the estimated total sales, the percentage of companies exporting outside of Canada, the current export markets, and some markets of interest.  Other information on company preparedness was gathered.

Some companies have indicated that market preparedness was a significant impediment to growing export sales. Companies have also indicated the need for pre market entry information on IP protection, visa requirements for cross border work, taxation and regulatory requirements. They also request information on how to optimally penetrate international jurisdictions, sales training including pitch, opening/closing sales deals; in market intelligence, etc.

During the June 2017 meeting in Halifax, the Team expressed the need to identify key markets that offer significant opportunities for the key vertical subsectors within the ICT sector. Team members, market specialists and industry in their effort to be hyper- focused, will identify 3 high-value markets of interest for export.

Ocean Supercluster Submission - Phase II

On October 10th, the Government of Canada (GOC) kicked off the announcement that the Ocean Supercluster submission from Atlantic Canada is one of the nine industry consortiums across the country that will compete in the final round of Ottawa's $950M Innovation Supercluster initiative. The "Oceans Supercluster" is a consortium of Atlantic Canadian marine-based companies, innovators, and researchers. Full applications are due from these shortlisted groups by November 24th and the government plans to announce up to five successful bids in early 2018.

With the news that Atlantic Canada's dynamic and innovation-driven Oceans Supercluster is one critical step closer to being designated one of Canada's few globally significant innovation Superclusters, business leaders and key stakeholders across the region are asking two key questions:
1. What does this mean for me and my company?
2. How can I help make this happen?

Join OceansAdvance at 2:00pm on October 30th at the NRC-OCRE Building where several of the key architects of Atlantic Canada's comprehensive and integrated Oceans Supercluster bid will be in St. John's to answer these and other key questions about the success of the Round I proposal, as well as, what success in Round II would mean for our community.

It is a discussion you will not want to miss. Your support and active participation, along with Atlantic colleagues and counterparts, will likely prove critical to the success of the collective efforts going forward.

Click here to RSVP no later than 12 p.m. on Thursday, Oct 26th. A large turnout is expected for this important information session so please reserve your seat early as space may be limited.

Technology Industry Critical to Province's Business Innovation Agenda
NATI welcomes commitment to cooperation, collaboration and community

St. John's, NL - The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (NATI) is encouraged by the clear commitment to cooperation, collaboration and community presented in the province's Business Innovation Agenda. The association, representing 165 local  technology companies generating $1.6 billion in revenue for the province each year, is keen to work with Government and other organizations to advance the agenda.

"When government makes a commitment to work with industry and communities it's encouraging," said NATI CEO Ron Taylor. "We have a technology sector that has the potential to become the economic engine of the province, but we need to work together to make that happen. Today was a step in the right direction."

"Fostering the growth of companies in technology will be critical to the diversification and the strengthening of our economy," said Kendra MacDonald, Chair of NATI. "We have companies today who are operating here and making it big globally, and we are just scratching the surface.  The more we can support these opportunities, the more wealth, jobs and reasons for our young talented people to stay, will come as a result."

In support of the Business Innovation Agenda, NATI will engage with government through InnovateNL and other initiatives to drive innovation, leverage the full potential of the technology industry, and create platform for growth for all sectors across Newfoundland and Labrador.

NATI looks forward to the next steps in the Business Innovation Agenda, and encourages government's efforts in the other areas including: creating a Young Entrepreneur Retention Program; creating a culture of innovation in schools by increasing options for co-operative education; and introducing entrepreneurship, technological literacy, including coding, early in our K-12 curriculum.

The business-to-business initiative will consist of two days of scheduled business-to-business meetings during the conference.

The delegation will have access to meeting space the day prior to and during the conference, and will have all access passes for the New York Media Conference.

PROJECT ELEMENTS

NATI, ACOA and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador have coordinated recruitment, and NATI will be the lead agency on the project.

The project will consist of:

  • A review of participating firms;
  • Consultation with company officials to ensure that their meetings objectives are clearly understood;
  • Undertaking a systematic prospecting campaign on behalf of each company to schedule a minimum of three (3) meetings;
  • Coordinating the logistics associated with the business-to-business meetings, including ground transportation logistics;
  • Preparing a detailed mission summary report within thirty days of completion of project reporting on the individual company results.

Project tasks are categorized under four (4) phases:

Phase 1: Assessment, Guidance and Mentoring

  • Work and communicate on a weekly basis with the company delegates throughout the pre- mission period to ensure that mutual goals set by the delegates and the Consultant are being met and problems are being addressed in a timely fashion.

Assist delegates in strategically preparing for doing business with potential partners/buyers. This involves knowledge of Atlantic Canadian technology, products, services, and business environment and the needs of the international business community. This also includes identifying gaps, and providing mentoring as required to assist delegates in preparing strategically for the mission.

Phase 2: Trade Opportunities and Delegate Profiles

  • Identify potential business partners for Atlantic Canadian delegates based upon criteria established through the profiles and meetings. Identify potential opportunities for Atlantic Canadian delegates.
  • Understand the needs of Atlantic Canadian companies and what is required for successful international business partnerships in an effort to generate strong business meetings and potential partnerships with organizations that can fulfil their needs.
  • Develop a listing of companies that will be attending the New York Media Festival Conference that match the requirements and interest of each delegate identified above.
  • Schedule and coordinate business meetings. Minimum of three (3) meetings with potential partners per company/institution are required. Each of the three (3) meetings must be pre- qualified and with key company personnel from their respective organizations.
  • Scheduled meetings are to meet the objectives of the delegate and hence, the quality of the match is crucial.
  • If two or more Atlantic Canadian delegates with competing interest are to meet with the same company, the delegates and NATI are to be notified and concurrence received prior to these meetings being confirmed.
  • Provide delegates and NATI with an update on the matchmaking process on a weekly basis by email. Updates should include specific information with regard to any issues, mentoring activities, and matches arranged.
  • Provide delegates with an individual agenda, including a detailed profile on each of the companies they will be meeting and opportunities to discuss. The profile is to include a web site, company address, and company brochure or written description of the firm and their products or services and this information should be provided to the delegate 5 working days prior to the mission. The profile should also include the identified opportunity and linkages to Atlantic delegates mission objectives.
  • Provide 50% of all matchmaking appointments for each company 8 working days prior to the commencement of the mission. The complete list of matchmaking appointments is to be provided to the delegates and the NATI within 1 week prior to commencement of the mission. The list should include address (if applicable), phone, e-mail, contact and website address.

Phase 3: On-Site Support at New York Media Festival Conference

  • Provide on-site support during the Mission. This requires a presence at the event, as well as help with problem solving and opportunity enhancement at the conference itself. The Matchmaker will participate in the mission to help facilitate the business program on-site including being available to provide on-site consultation to delegates as well as trouble shoot any items (pertaining to meetings) as needed.
  • Assist in the welcoming briefing session with the Atlantic delegates on October 3, 2016.

Phase 4: Post Show Assessment, Final Report and Recommendations

NATI Innovation Day Showcases World-Class Technology in Sea Cucumber Processing

Traditional Industries Embracing Technology and Innovation for Global Competitiveness

(St. Lawrence, NL) - The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (NATI) together with the Town of St. Lawrence and Ocean Choice International hosted the first in a series of NATI Innovation Days, to show how technology and innovation is being embraced in traditional industries to modernize operations, increase competitiveness, expand markets, and create greater economic opportunity for communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The world is changing and so are the markets in which Newfoundland and Labrador industries compete. Today's NATI Innovation Day focused in on how Ocean Choice International has used technology and innovation in processing sea cucumber to not only develop a new market but also create new opportunity for St. Lawrence and its people, while also exploring how other industries, including the mining operation at Fluorspar, have also adopted technology and innovation.

"Technology and innovation transcends across all industries and it's an important enabler of new opportunity.  This morning we saw this in action while touring the fish processing facility," said Nancy Andrews, Senior Director of Business and Communications at NATI. "This set the stage for a broader panel discussion this afternoon where leaders in technology, the fishery, mining, and municipal government came together to explore how traditional industries can leverage technology and innovation to evolve with the needs of global markets."

Several years ago, Ocean Choice International leaned on its strong presence in Asian markets and its sales team to develop a market for sea cucumber, knowing species diversification was critical to the continued success of shore-based plants in rural communities. This year the company launched a new automation technology for its sea cucumber operation that makes the processing less labour-intensive, more efficient, and creates a higher quality end product that is more competitive in Asia.

"Sea cucumbers, a traditionally underutilized species is now a major part of our operations in St. Lawrence, for harvesters, and plant workers," explained Blaine Sullivan, Chief Operations Officer at Ocean Choice International. "The innovative technology was developed and designed in-house by our own employees drawing on the collaboration and expertise of Ocean Choice engineering, seafood processing, and product marketing teams. This technology has allowed us to expand the sales of Newfoundland sea cucumber."

"Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are some of the most innovative people in the country, and the world, and the Government of Canada is proud to support NATI's showcase of that innovation," said Churence Rogers, Member of Parliament for Burin-Bonavista-Trinity. "I'm particularly proud of the innovation happening right here in St. Lawrence, and the great example of collaboration between the town, Ocean Choice International and its employees to not only remain operational, but to increase competitiveness and execute on new ways to deliver a Newfoundland and Labrador product to the world."
