NATI invites eligible companies to apply to the Export Internship Program for 2017 - 2018

Program Description: The Export Internship Program is designed to offer work opportunities for Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) university and college graduates, and to provide potential and existing exporters with quality trade advisory services. Selected companies will engage a graduate for a period of one (1) year, with substantial funding support through the Export Internship Program.

Since 2011, this program has provided valuable assistance to exporting and export-ready firms in our province.

The Export Internship Program provides hands-on work experience for NL graduates and contributes towards strengthening the export performance of the province by encouraging SMEs to initiate and expand export activities.

For 2017 - 2018, 11 positions in total will be available to eligible NL firms. The program will provide a separate competition process for early stage and startup companies, and placements are specifically allocated for these emerging firms within the program. Companies will contribute a minimum of 25% ($10,000) of the graduate's salary and benefits to the minimum per annum salary of $40,000, excluding all mandatory employer-related costs (MERC). The Program will contribute 75% of the intern's salary to a maximum of $30,000.

The Program is open to eligible NL-based firms who are exporting or are export ready. The selected graduates will have graduated within the past three years from a recognized post- secondary institution, and reside in Newfoundland & Labrador.

As a valuable member of your team, the intern's position will focus on contributing to your export activities, which may include:

- Identifying new market opportunities
- Supporting new market entry
- Assisting with development of an export strategy
- Assisting with implementation of an existing export strategy or plan

As such this mission will be targeted at mature and experienced Atlantic Canadian exporters. The consultant will be tasked with ensuring that these companies get the most value from their participation.

The selected matchmaking firm will be expected to ensure each attendee is prepared for the rigorous exercise in dealing with the NYC market. As such, the selected firm will have prior experience and a successful track record of assisting companies in the NYC marketplace. The matchmaker will be selected through an IBDA RFP process

The participation fee per company is $500.00, including matchmaking.

Coding in Schools Pilot Program

0
0

NATI is launching a Coding in Schools pilot program and we need your help!

Beginning in 2017, NATI is launching a coding program for grades 4-6 students. This pilot program will begin with up to five schools in the greater metro area, running as an after school program from 3:00-5:00pm one day a week for six to eight weeks. We are looking for NATI members to Sponsor a School!

Camouflage began this program at MacDonald Drive Elementary in 2015 with 15 students and grew it to include almost 40 students in 2016. Volunteers from the company visited the school for ten consecutive weeks, teaching the students Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/). Now we are looking to our members to help us expand the program!

Coding is extremely important. By teaching coding in schools, students become familiar with a new "language" and way of thinking at a young age, and may become interested in and gain the foundation they need for an exciting and sought after career.

The federal government recently predicted that jobs in STEM fields - science, technology engineering and maths - would grow by 12 per cent between 2013 and 2022 (http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/back-to-school-canada-lagging-in-push-to-teach-kids-computer-coding-1.3185926).

Sponsoring a School will require companies to send one volunteer to visit a school six to eight times, assisting a maximum of 15 students through Scratch Workshops to aid and encourage students as they learn to code in a fun and hands-on way. There are a number of materials available for volunteers including:

In order for this program to be successful, we are looking for 5 companies to volunteer their time at a school, teaching students for two hours a week for six to eight weeks. NATI will coordinate with the schools and arrange a volunteer helper.

If you're interested in participating in this exciting new pilot program, please contact:

Hacking Health St. John's, a chapter of Hacking Health, launched in September 2016. Hacking Health aims to transform healthcare by connecting healthcare professionals with designers, developers, innovators and entrepreneurs to build realistic, human-centric solutions to front-line healthcare problems.

Hacking Health St. John's Hackathon

The first Hacking Health St. John's Hackathon, taking place from March 31st to April 2nd, 2017, is a weekend-long hackathon that breaks down barriers to healthcare innovation by bringing together IT and healthcare professionals to collaborate, dream up & design apps, devices and solutions for patient-centric care.

Over 48 hours, designers, developers, project managers and patients collaborate with doctors, nurses, hospital administrators to rapidly develop digital & mobile health solutions as well as and some viable businesses.

It all starts with project leaders pitching their ideas to the group, and then teams form - developers and patients are free to join whatever projects catch their interest. Then it's a two-day mad dash to the finish line as teams work furiously to design, build, and test working prototype. At the end, everyone presents what they've finished and provides a quick demonstration if they're able.

Call for Sponsors

Hacking Health St. John's is not possible without the support of their partners and the community. Sponsoring the Hackathon is a great opportunity for your company, one which will provide exposure and recognition both leading up to and during the event.

What is Dream, Girl?

"We know the names of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg. But what about the female entrepreneurs? What's their story? From brand new startups to million dollar industries, it's time we stop telling girls they can be anything they want to be and show them what it means to be a leader."

Dream, Girl is a documentary film showcasing the stories of inspiring and ambitious female entrepreneurs produced by Erin Bagwell & Komal Minhas. Dream, Girl launched at a private screening at the White House on May 26th, 2016 followed by a sold out world premiere June 9th at the iconic Paris Theater in NYC on June 9th, 2016. To learn more information about the film check out the official website at DreamGirlFilm.com

Why Dream, Girl?

Newfoundland & Labrador is home to a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem that seeds, supports and nurtures a stream of emerging startups. Through private industry, academic and government policy efforts, the province has built a robust engine to accelerate the level of entrepreneurial activity across all sectors. However, like many jurisdictions across Canada, NL has a disproportionately low percentage of female entrepreneurs, and increasing the number of women who start their own businesses remains a daunting challenge to address in our ecosystem. The film presents the stories of a diverse trio of fascinating female entrepreneurs in the context of pursuing your passion and dreaming BIG.

This community event is presented and supported by: NLOWE, NATI, WISE NL, BDC Capital, Genesis Centre, Common Ground, Propel ICT, Futurpreneur, MUN's Centre for Entrepreneurship, MUN's Centre for Social Enterprise and the Atlantic Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

NATI, in partnership with the College of the North Atlantic, present Youth in Technology 2017. Join us to help promote the technology sector as a rewarding career choice for our province's youth!

What's Youth in Technology (YIT)?

The annual Youth in Technology Conference is being held on Thursday, April 27th 2017, at the College of the North Atlantic Prince Phillip Drive Campus in St. John's. Exclusively for grade nine students, this exciting event promotes Information Technology as a rewarding career and academic choice.

Newfoundland & Labrador continues to experience an acute shortage of the skilled resources required to grow our advanced technology sector. Today more than ever, the growth of the NL technology sector is a key component to diversifying our economy. In order to increase the number of qualified candidates to meet the demands of companies and organizations in the sector, youth in the province need to be exposed to the many aspects of the technology industry. Early exposure will allow youth to become aware of the jobs and opportunities that are available to them, highlighting the benefits of these opportunities and increasing their interest in a career in technology.

Sponsors are acknowledged in all print and digital material distributed at the conference, and in all media communications. Sponsors are also invited to participate at the event, and to provide promotional materials for display during the conference.

This year sponsorship is available at 3 levels:
